MAN Engine Heading To Sea


MAN Diesel & Turbo’s 175D V12 engine is undergoing a broad array of tests and will soon be deployed in marine pilot projects, the company said.

Commercial shipping is the main application for the 175D engine, which was introduced at SMM in 2014. MAN said the engine is optimized for propulsion in ferries, offshore supply vessels, tug boats and working vessels, but the engine is aslo fit for onboard power generation.

Currently, several engines and generator sets are running in eight separate test beds, both in IMO Tier 2 and Tier 3 modes. Continuous endurance testing has been run for over 1000 hours and special, extreme condition tests have been done with overload and overspeed, the company said.

“The tests so far has been very successful,” said Lex Nijsen, VP and head of Four Stroke Marine. “And currently we have we have engines for a few pilot projects under production. Within the next months the first engine out of four will be delivered to an undisclosed offshore service vessel in Europe. Our engines will replace engines of a competitors make.”

The four MAN175 engines will be used for diesel electric propulsion each engine providing 1920 kW at 1800 r/m. The annual operation hours is expected to be 4000 to 5000 hours and the engine will meet IMO Tier 3 regulations.

“A second pilot project is two MAN 175 engines for a catamaran passenger vessel. This application is for mechanical propulsion and the two engines will each drive a fixed propeller. The engine power is 2220 kW,” said Nijsen. “The catamaran will be used for ferry operation in Asia with the annual operating hours expected to be 4000 hours. Delivery of the engines will take place in 2017.”

The MAN 175D engine has a common rail fuel injection system and combines a high-efficiency MAN turbocharger with an engine-mounted control system. The 175D engine complies with IMO Tier 2 emissions regulations and for the IMO Tier 3 version a compact and modular selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system is added. This SCR system has been developed in-house by MAN.
